New currents in mainstream journalism. The Plain Dealer is very conspicuously hitting the queer beat. Nick Charles' extensive piece on the community Nov. 29 was probably the most detailed coverage initiated by the paper in years.
It was followed by a Nov. 30 “Next” page on gay-lesbian youth featuring two first-person accounts by PRYSM members and a resource list that has resulted in kids calling the Center at elementary school age and up.
On tap next: a Sunday magazine piece by Michael Heaton.
We can only hope it's not just a phase.
And in local papers... PRYSM will shortly be mailing its annual school newspaper ads to over 100 local high school and college publications, encouraging them to make their gay-lesbian youth aware of our services.
This is one of the many projects designed by the Outreach Committee of PRYSM. If you have interest in assisting our efforts in making schools, youth agencies, the media and isolated young members of our community more in touch, come any Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and join the
crew.
Such an array of Talent. A rousing round of applause to all who helped make Center Stage II possible: production crew, techies, performers, schleppers, ticket sellers, security, etc., etc!
The Nov. 22 event drew a rowdy, sizable house as did the stand-up comedy reception beforehand and the carnival-theme dance following.
Anyone who missed Marga Gomez' inspired routine on Minnie Mouse's seduction of Anais Nin must consider their lives substantially stinted.
Our apologies to all who got multiple flyer mailings. Duplicates resulted from several mailing lists being used and not cross-checked. Won't happen again.
Speaking of animated festivity. Immediately after finishing this article, proceed speedily to the nearest theater showing Aladdin. This has nothing to do with the Center, but it's just too good to pass up. The late, great Howard Ashman coupled with the new family members at the helm at Disney are producing a glorious new camp spin on the old full-length cartoon front that would have sent old uncle Walt running for his gum eraser. A treat for the whole community.
Brick by brick we built the castle. The "Inner Beauty" renovation of the Center forges forward. Thanks to all who continue to contribute skills and material. Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in January and February, we'll continue this revamp and if you're skilled in any area of home
repair--please call. The Center is home for our community.
Big in-kind need-of-the-month: new midsize ceiling fans.
Calling all lesbian-gay history buffs. Our Northeast Ohio Gay-Lesbian Archives is in need of volunteers to sort through donated collections and solicit groups and individuals in the community for their papers.
If you're invested in leaving a legacy for future generations, this is a wonderful volunteering opportunity. Call the number below and we'll share the whole story.
Law enforcement meets lavender menace. Out in the Open, the Center's Speakers Bureau, is working with the Maryann Finegan Project, our anti-violence program, for two presentations to Lakewood rookies and the full police force January 10 and 14.
Over 80 officers will participate in the training designed to raise awareness about gay-lesbian issues and victimization.
Groups coming, groups going. A new March on Washington committee will start meeting at the Center on Jan. 11 and 25 at 6 p.m. Regrettably, the Saturday Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting, the Sunday eve HIV positive A.A. meeting, and the North Coast Freedom Band are no longer meeting.
All a-board! Dolores Noll has been reelected as Board of Trustees president with new positions taken by Joan Organ (vice), and Scott Bibbs (secretary). Congrats!
The board is currently finalizing its 1993 budget and funding plans as well as orienting new members for the year ahead.
Safe space for men. Gay and bisexual men have truly few opportunities in Cleveland where they can explore their feelings and challenges in a non-judgemental and caring context.
Men in Touch--now entering its fourth year--fills that need. Co-facilitated by volunteer peers, this seven-week program exploring men's issues and growth will begin its 1993 groups at the Health Issues Taskforce on January 7, and at the Center on January 19.
Call 621-0766 or 781-6736 for more information.
L.A. story. The annual National Gay and Lesbian Task Force "Creating Change" Conference was kicked off in a big way in November with a welcoming letter. from President-elect Clinton and his wife. L.A. participants--including the Center E.D. Leigh Robertson--were then treated to a heady weekend of workshops and events which included plans for reversing the recently-passed Colorado and Tampa antigay legislation, plus a tumultuous roast of exiting NGLTF head, Urvashi Vaid, and incoming leader Torie Osborne.
For information about any of the above, or any questions about the Center, please call 522-1999 during business hours.
